greater than through love and support: the radio show with Rape Crisis Center and Domestic Violence Shelter and Services

Happy Saturday Everyone
I know it is Azalea Festival and the sun is shining and Lord knows today's discussion would be wonderful if only it could be those amazing homeade cookies at the Cape Fear Garden Club or talk of the parade or funnel cakes dowtown, this month has a special designation in new hanover county and there are some special events coming up as well that are part of a solution that don't always get brought up over tea or street fairs..but frankly should given how prevalent they are. While this show might be tough..I pray you will stick around, call your family to listen and lets be the messengers that can make a differnece by learning and filling up with knowledge to combat some pretty staggering forces of violence in our community.
April is Sexual Assualt Awareness Month here in New Hanover county with over 500 cases last year, and with DOUBLE that in domestic violence cases in our area, these are issues that need to be discussed and brought to light so that not only we can make a difference, we can be a part of the solution. In the studio today are two advocates, educators and leaders who are on the front lines making a difference everyday:

Ms. Julie Ozier from the Rape Crisis Center of Coastal Horizon's Inc.

I SPY: Nothing in my life happens by coincidence. Nothing. Nov of 2011 I had the chance that not many have...to take some talents I learned that I had and use them for a professional job..and while it turned out that where I was to use them was not the place I was to go permenantly...again..everything worked out exactly as it was supposed to. Along that part of the journey, I had the opporutnity to be exposed to some amazing people..well..true heros. True advocates of things that make our community what it is, what makes it special. But one in particular really left a lasting impression and this past week he passed away after and extraordinary life. The day I met him, he arrived in a wheelchair with his attendent. An email came that announced to the entire staff that he was in the building. I gathered myself and went downstairs and in the corner of the school room, tucked by the library shelves, this very thin man in a wheel chair, in courdory pants and a well worn shirt, ironed and buttoned to the neck sat with a cup of coffee in his hands. When I got in the room, he was trying to speak to his attendant and was having a great deal of difficulty forming his words. It appeared he had had a stroke. I knelt beside his chair and introduced myself to him. I could tell immediately he knew who I was. He spoke through the stroke and formed his words as best he could. Here was the man who had been so much of the reason we have the very place I was sitting in. He had given so much, but he had his wife's name on the building. Not being shy...I looked and him and said, "I only have one question for you: Why?. Why did you do all this". He looked at me and with a passion I will never forget. He did not hesitate and it was as if there had never been a stroke..never been an impediment.....that he was a young as myself..and he said as clearly as anything I was saying "becuase I loved her". That was it. It was just that simple. Out of this great love that he had in his life, he wanted to give and out of that love he wanted it to transcend her life and bring about more to everyone. It was a moment i willl cherish. It was a moment that inspires me to this day. So this week, I spy, Mr. Bruce: bruce cameron and life up all the love that transcends us and becomes greater than ourselves. May his love and all the good he gave to this world flourish forever and may our own love in this world inspire us to do things that transcend our very short experience on this earth!

We here the word disability in our speak, in our community all the time. But we don't often here all of the amazing roles that persons who are differently able can and do play in our community and about those who seek to ensure the best for persons of every ability..who is it that wants to help make sure that regardless of our different abilities, we have education, housing, employment, and even safety and advocacy and a voice when in danger and victims of assault or harm. Well, today, three of the areas strongest and most vital advocates for persons with disabilities join us in the studio and the program promises to be one that opens not only awareness about advocacy, but understanding and inclusion in our community.
As always..I am blown away with who I get to sit here with and today is not exception...it is my honor to welcome:

I SPY: I got invited to a breakfast this week for Smart Start. Lord knows getting up at the crack of the day before to get all dressed up for some UNCW dried eggs and bacon is not necessarily my favorite thing. But my hosts were friends and I was looking forward to supporting Head Start and sharing time with people I care about..that is the point right? I got a who lot more. At this event they do recogniction for people in the community who are children's champions and two of those nominated are selected to receive special recognition. I read each of their nominations and I was so inspired. With all the talk of North Korea, the national economy, local quote en quote leaders spending money on security at meetings, here were these fierce advocates of education...of our children, from all walks of like...living the solution. One in particular, who received the special recognition was to have a child with down syndrome in her class room. She took sign language classes to so that she could better communicate and not only be more successful teaching..but reaching that one child..being inclusive..and welcoming. Here story was so inspiring..all of theirs were and so this week...I Spy her, Mrs. Nancy Heath and all those Champions from Smart Start making a difference in our children's lives each and every day!

Conservation Horticulturist, NC Aquarium Ft. Fisher

My education background includes a B.S. in Wildlife Biology from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln and an M.S. in Biology from UNCW.  (My thesis involved the study of the breeding behavior & ecology of Least terns, which nest on our local beaches and a few rooftops).  I am currently enrolled in the graduate program at Wake Forest University pursuing a PhD in Botany.

I have been working with plants for 24 years.  I started with the Nebraska Forestry Service working for an Extension and Research Forester.  I have worked in retail garden centers and with growers in both the Midwest and in North Carolina.  I spent a year and-a-half working as an environmental consultant delineating and mapping wetlands and conducting environmental assessments throughout the state.

For twelve years I have been the Conservation Horticulturist at the Ft. Fisher Aquarium.  There I am responsible for the care of all plants inside and out, including the Cape Fear Conservatory.  I have been active in dune-restoration efforts, native plant propagation, and community outreach.  I serve as the state coordinator for the Beach Vitex Task Force, a group dedicated to the eradication of this exotic invasive species, as well as serving on the board of the NC Invasive Plant Council.  I also am a proud member of both the Wilmington Tree Commission and the executive committee of the Cape Fear Arch Conservation Collaborative.

My goals are to present plants to people as part of our ecological community as well as part of our gardens; to foster an appreciation of the important interactions between plants, animals and other life forms; to teach low-impact gardening practices; and to introduce gardeners to our native species that are both sustainable and quite pleasing in the landscape.
How do the two work together? How are the two different? What myths would you like to dispel about what you do? What would be the best resource for families? Individuals?

I SPY:I started I spy to shout out about people doing good things and celebrate the good that we do each and everyday and just keep that good going on out there. I intended for it not to ever focus on folks who already win big awards and get a lot of attention. But it occurred to me this week that sometimes people get attention for what others perceive they should get attention for and sometimes we don't get attention for the good things we actually do. I had the privilege to attend the firefighters memorial luncheon. I have been a fan our our force here since i attended the citizen's academy back when Sandra Spaulding Hughes was on council and I learned so much about all the WFD does for this community. When this memorial was proposed, it was done without one dollar coming from the taxpayers, it would be in empie park, one of our finest rehabbed parks, and here was the thing...here is a place that we not only memorialize those who lost their lives in the line of duty...but a place to reflect on those who serve today and a tribute to the work done. This effort needed a fundraiser....and one came a long. But unlike what most might Perceive. This fundraiser wanted to give back. She used her resources and her life of service to the community and she did this effort at no cost. She gave back. Well, at that luncheon, it was announced they are within 50k of finishing this project. An amazing effort. But never would it have happened without the efforts of a professional organizing the effort...and she did it for free. So this week, I spy Louise McColl and all who give back to this community. All who do things that others may not know about. All who do regardless of other's perception. All who understand that it is about what we do, not what we have that it is really important and the legacy that we leave in the end.

I SPY:tucked away in a downtown office, you would think you were in a non profit. A large room of cubicles with a couple of tufted leather chairs, probably left over from a bank or some closure sale welcoming you to the entrance of the office. The CEO sits in one of the cubicles with his senior sales person and the rest of the staff is dispersed throughout the room and if you are having a conversation, they are all tapped in..but ready to do something..make it happen. They are the happiest bunch you will ever meet and one of the most effective in the region and out of that lean mean operation comes the most trusted news source for business along the coast and the most powerful events that the business community gets to navigate and network in the area. It's an old fashioned operation of relationship building and keeping it lean and mean and being about the product and services and doing the best for the community....and it comes from leadership. This week, walking around the regions biggest, baddest, and most profound business expo, with the governor as the keynote and 600 for lunch, 1400 registered for seminars, over 3000 attending, here is the CEO, the wizard behind the curtain, and he is walking around with is kids...sharing all this with his family. They come first..and any of his team with kids..well, they are there too. So, this week, I spy Rob Kaiser, publisher and owner of Wilmington biz magazine, wilmington biz expo, the power breakfast series,  and wilma mag. A man with a vision for the best of who we are in the community for business development but also someone who gets it that its not about the flash and spin..its about the product and the profound difference you can make on the community as a whole. But linking us all up, we are stronger, more productive and more able to do more for each other and for the today and the future!

greater than through love and support: accessible recreation

Happy Saturday Everyone!
Thank you for taking time out of your day to tune in! Access....a powerful and palpable word for millions of our neighbors, friends, and fellows who on a daily basis come to situations where differences a simple adjustment in the way WE think about inclusion would allow for them to be involved in tasks we take for granted everyday..and as a result....better quality of lives, health and wellness result. Today's guests are just such thinks...who include everyone and who do so in seeking ways to make sure that in sports and recreation in particular, everyone can have access and as a result...it is not just about play..which is important..it is about transforming some pretty staggering statistics about health for people and creating solutions for better lives.

I SPY:
It was David and Trey Doolittle out for a ride..Father and Son...on a beautiful day on river road and tragically they were hit by a drunk driver. It was devastating. It was horrific. I will never forget it for many reasons..but at the time I was just starting to change my own life and was riding my bike and learning what a joy that was..and I was on the cusp of learning to run for the first time too. I hear about a "ride" for the doolittle's....a fundraiser...and I felt compelled to go. I went and there was this lanky guy in lycra bike gear with a bull horn and a truck that was clearly the leader of it all. His passion and his concern brought out thousands for this ride...and you could see the power of this on face of the widow..the mother who had lost her son. After that..I kept seeing this man and watching his coaching business develop and see the extraordinary things he was doing. He named his company "without limits" and while I know i have limitations, I got his branding and saw him transforming lives with his coaching...people from 16 to 70...and he encouraged me on my runs as well. Yesterday, he was in the corner of the big tent for the Quintiles Marathon..yep..he is the organizer and brings in over 3000 participants and a crowd 5 times that....and makes a difference economically and on our area that is amazing..and there he was..just in the corner watching it all happen. This week I spy Tom Clifford of Without Limits Coaching. A man who makes a difference by harnessing his passion and makes it worth while for others..transforms lives, gives back, and makes a difference. His contributions are "without limits".

Thank you for taking time out of your day to tune in! Living in a community you get a chance, over time to see the difference that leaders can make on the quality of life and the overall impact that they make in moving forward in developing ways to meet a communities needs, regardless of the budgets, the politics, or the circumstances which are constantly changing. Never perfect, but focused on the mission and seeming to understand that it is about progress not perfection, mission, not personalities, we have two such leaders creating solutions in our community that for many make for a much more restful sleep at night for all families in Wilmington.

I SPY:
so this week I went to a board meeting. yep...that should come as no shock..I am pretty sure that either when I am called home or the second coming happens, I will be in a board meeting or at a fundraiser...either of the two..but regardless, I will be in good company and this meeting was no exception. We were there to decide were we were going and how to give out the money raised from this year's tournament. What a great discussion and on the birthday of the person to whom we dedicate the tournament each year. Our doc, who is a founding member and served to help keep our memorialized player alive to the end, was there and he said " i have something to show you"...well, like most docs he had some statistics...26 million people live with chronic kidney disease, over 500,000 await a transplant..but this doc...this one, pulled out his little computer and showed a presentation that he had done for duke and chapel hill..mind you he is a NHRMC doc..and our homeboy..but he is such a fierce advocate for what he does..he has gone eveywhere to see how to build bigger networks, across company lines, becuase it is about saving lives, making better quality of life, and doing right for patients...and interestingly enough..it is helping them financially in the end...by the end of his presentation of a case study..we were all stunned. Powerful and life affirming...you just never know in your community who can harness their talents, their resources to make a difference..you never know when one life is going to change another. Willie Stargell is who we honor with our tournament and raise funds for kidney disease..and it was Willie who was treated by this doc..and Willie changed his life forever...and now...because of the money for the tournament and what is being done..right here, through NHRMC...lives are saved, transformed..made better...Willie lives..and this week..I spy Dr. McCabe...a Doc who lives the mission, the oath and serves a higher calling and purpose and is like so many of us transformed by events and forever doing something good as a result.

I SPY:
This week I had the opportunity to attend the WAVE transit board meeting to join with others to speak on behalf of restoring a line to an area of town that had bus stops removed from its area after a survey was done by a consultant when the residents were not in the neighborhood due to reconstruction of a development. It was a wonderful meeting and I was very impressed with the WAVE board and all those who presented. But one in particular who spoke was a grandmother who has taken charge of the children in her life and has now all 5 of the children under her care. She is the primary caregiver to all these children and shared her efforts now faced with walking close to a mile to a bus stop to access transportation to get food for her family. Today I spy this grandmother and all the grandmother’s like her…all those who preserve, all those who show up and stand up, all those who speak with love and passion, all those who live the solution of care for their loved ones no matter what and no matter what length they must go…..my prayer is that her story was heard and her walk will not be so long.

I SPY: I have had the honor of becoming an member of a newly formed group that grew out of a Mayor's task force. Here, once a month, a group comes together to address the needs of all persons with disabilities. It is astounding to see the volunteer participation at this group. Police, fire, county, city, advocacy groups and individuals all sitting in this room, packed seeking ways in which to find solutions to addressing onstacles, sharing resources, and formulating means to convey inclusive messaging for persons with disabilies accross our region. At this meeting, a large population of elderly and disabled persons were told they no longer were going to have a service that meant accesss for them. This group desgined, and unanimously decided to move forward with vocing concern and sharing how this impact could potentially impact these citizens. WIthout this voice, a decision could continue unabated and there be no change. But there is a solution and this group, focused on what it can do and how it can employ its resources, put them into action. It was a wonderful thing to witness and be a part of. This a number of things make this so special and so this week, I SPY the Cape Fear Disability Commission and all the good work they are employed in doing, the change they are a part of, and the advocacy they are about. Giving a voice to those without a voice, or a voice that is unified and shared among the many advocates is so powerful and this group has a strong and powerful voice of solutions for our entire community!
